A yard gets wet. A feed pad gets wet, and then gets effluent, spilled silage and maize worked into it by four hundred hooves. That mix turns the surface greasy in a way plain water never does, and it happens fastest right along the trough where the cows spend the most time.
Cows on a feed pad are also doing the things most likely to put them down. They push in alongside each other, turn on the spot to get at the trough, and back out again with a full belly. Every one of those is a sideways movement, and sideways is exactly where a smooth wet pad offers nothing.
Scraping helps for an hour. Then feeding starts again and the surface is back to what it was.

Why grooving beats the alternatives
Anything laid on top of a feed pad has a hard life. Coatings and non-slip treatments wear through where the traffic is heaviest, which is precisely where you needed them, and effluent gets underneath the edges. Grooving is cut into the slab, so there is nothing to lift, peel or replace.
Replacing a pad is the other option, and it is a different order of money and downtime. Grooving works with the concrete you already have — if the slab is sound, it can be grooved.
